Choose the right edition

Basic and Advanced Pre/Post editions

The Basic template is suitable when each assessment can be reviewed as its own result table. The Advanced edition is designed for research, workshops and conferences that follow the same participants across several timepoints.

  • Create or repair a managed two-field Google Form
  • Generate the MAGIC prefilled submission link
  • Keep direct responses in a Raw tab
  • Create a clean View for each selected study
  • Select the ID and result fields to display
  • Optionally match local participant information
Available now

Pre/Post Longitudinal Generator

A separate edition based on the latest Apps Script workflow.

  • Combine Pre, Post 1, Post 2 and later assessments
  • Match by Participant ID or verified Google email
  • Show one participant per longitudinal row
  • Flag missing assessments and duplicate attempts
  • Keep unmatched Pre-only and Post-only records visible
  • Apply display rules and create SPSS-ready exports
Important distinction

The Basic template can create separate Pre and Post study Views, but it does not automatically combine them into one longitudinal participant record. Use the Advanced edition when paired or multi-timepoint analysis is required.

How to use this guide

The Basic tutorial appears first and the Advanced tutorial follows it. These are two alternative editions—not two installation stages. Choose one template for your live study and do not register the same live assessment in both spreadsheets.

Basic edition tutorial · Part 1

Set up your first Basic study

Follow these five steps in order if you selected the Basic template. The Basic edition creates an independent result View for each assessment.

1Copy and authoriseCreate your Sheet copy and approve the script.
2Add studyCreate or register the assessment Form.
3Add MAGIC linkConnect the Form endpoint to BlitzTrials.
4Test connectionSend one complete dummy submission.
5Generate ViewSelect fields and review the result table.

Step 1: Copy and authorise the Basic template

  1. Select Copy Basic in the Basic Results Generator card above.
  2. Choose the Google Drive location where you want to keep the spreadsheet.
  3. Open the copied spreadsheet and wait for the BlitzTrials menu to appear.
  4. If prompted, review and authorise the Apps Script permissions.
Do not paste the script twice

The Apps Script is already attached to the official template. Adding a second copy of the same functions can cause duplicate-function errors.

Step 2: Add a managed study

  1. Select BlitzTrials → Add / Repair Study.
  2. Choose Add new study.
  3. Enter the assessment name used by the matching BlitzTrials deployment.
  4. Select the participant identity method offered by the template.
  5. Review the Form responder-access options and start setup.
  6. Allow all setup stages to finish before closing the window.
Example assessment name: Diabetes Workshop Pre Example Magical ID: Diabetes Workshop Pre | CODE001 | Group A | CONSENT: GIVEN | ...

Step 3: Add the MAGIC link to BlitzTrials

The installer creates a managed Form with two required questions: Magical ID and Magical Result. It then produces a prefilled link containing MAGIC_ID and MAGIC_RESULT.

  1. Copy the MAGIC link from the completed installer or column C of BlitzTrials Setup.
  2. Open the matching deployment in BlitzTrials.
  3. Paste it into the Pre-filled Submission Endpoint URL field.
  4. Confirm that both MAGIC placeholders are detected.
  5. Save the BlitzTrials deployment.

Step 4: Test the complete connection

Always use non-live test data before inviting participants.

  1. Open the matching deployment through the normal participant route.
  2. Complete one full dummy assessment using a clearly recognisable test Participant ID or test ticket.
  3. For visible submission, complete the final Google Form submission step. Hidden submission sends the result automatically.
  4. Return to the copied spreadsheet and confirm that the correct Raw tab contains both Magical ID and Magical Result.
  5. Resolve any mismatch before collecting live responses.

Step 5: Generate and review the Basic View

  1. Open BlitzTrials Setup.
  2. Select the assessment and tick the ID and result fields you want to display.
  3. Choose Generate Selected Study Tabs.
  4. Review the generated View and compare it with the original Raw response tab.

Raw response tab

Contains the direct Google Form response data. Do not delete, rename or manually restructure a managed Raw tab.

Processed View tab

Displays the selected participant ID, score and question fields in a cleaner study-specific table.

Diabetes Workshop PrePre Raw and Pre ViewSeparate Pre result table
Diabetes Workshop Post 1Post 1 Raw and Post 1 ViewSeparate Post 1 result table
Need Pre and Post in the same participant row?

That is an Advanced-edition function. It matches selected assessment records and displays completion, missing-data and duplicate-attempt indicators without silently discarding unmatched participants.

Basic edition tutorial · Part 2

Choose what appears in the Basic View

Use these options after the first test submission has reached the correct Raw tab and you are ready to refine the study-specific View.

Magical ID fields

Participant ID, study, group, consent status, consent time or the original Magical ID.

Result fields

Total marks, total time, score breakdown, question choices, question time and question points.

Optional Info fields

Locally maintained details can be matched through the Participant ID in column A of the Info tab.

Anonymous workflow

Leave all optional Info fields unticked when names and local identifiers are not required.

Repair or resume an existing Basic study

  1. Select BlitzTrials → Add / Repair Study.
  2. Choose Repair / resume.
  3. Select the existing assessment from the dropdown. Its locked name is filled automatically.
  4. Review the settings and run Repair / resume.

Repair reuses the registered Form and saved study configuration where possible. It does not require you to type the locked assessment name again.

Review optional Google Form owner settings

Email collection and Google Forms’ one-response limit remain controlled by the Form owner.

Need combined Pre/Post reporting?

Your Basic setup is complete. Continue to the Advanced tutorial below only if you need paired or multi-timepoint participant matching. Use the separate Advanced spreadsheet for that workflow.

Advanced Pre/Post tutorial

Extend the workflow to paired and longitudinal assessments

The Advanced template is intended for research studies, courses, conferences and workshops that collect results from the same participant at more than one timepoint. It uses the same Form and MAGIC-link principles explained in the Basic tutorial, then adds participant matching and combined reports.

Use the separate Advanced spreadsheet

Do not add the same live study to both editions. If you need combined reporting, copy the Advanced template and create all related timepoints inside that Advanced spreadsheet.

One assessment = one managed study and one MAGIC link

Create Pre, Post 1, Post 2 and later assessments separately using Add new study. Use Repair / resume only when restoring the same assessment, Form and link.

Step 1: Copy and authorise the Advanced template

  1. Select Copy Advanced in the Advanced Pre/Post card above.
  2. Save the copy in the appropriate Google Drive or approved institutional workspace.
  3. Open the copied spreadsheet and wait for the BlitzTrials menu to appear.
  4. Choose BlitzTrials → Open / Refresh Checkbox Setup and approve Google’s permission request.
  5. Reload the spreadsheet if the BlitzTrials menu does not appear immediately.
If the installer says that the Drive service is unavailable

Open Extensions → Apps Script. Under Services, select +, add Drive API, save the project and run setup again. This is normally required only if the copied project did not retain the supplied service configuration.

Step 2: Name every timepoint clearly

Use the same research title followed by a clear timepoint. The Advanced report recognises Pre, Baseline, Post 1, Post 2 and Follow-up 1 when arranging assessment order.

Recommended assessment names: Diabetes Workshop Pre Diabetes Workshop Post 1 Diabetes Workshop Post 2
Avoid one name such as “Diabetes Workshop Pre/Post”

Pre and Post are separate data collections. Giving each timepoint its own name, managed Form and MAGIC link makes the reporting order clear and prevents the wrong link from being placed in a deployment.

Step 3: Choose how participants will be matched

Matching methodSuitable forRequirement
Participant IDHidden or visible submission, coded research IDs and single-use ticketsThe same participant must use exactly the same ID at every timepoint.
Google Verified EmailVisible Google Forms where respondents can sign inThe Form owner must manually enable verified email collection. Hidden submission cannot provide a verified Google email.

Use one matching method consistently throughout the same longitudinal study. Changing from Participant ID to email between timepoints will prevent reliable matching.

Step 4: Create the Pre assessment

  1. Select BlitzTrials → Add / Repair Study.
  2. Choose Add new study.
  3. Enter the complete Pre assessment name, for example Diabetes Workshop Pre.
  4. Select the participant matching method.
  5. Review the responder-access and one-response reminder options.
  6. Run all installer stages and copy the generated Pre MAGIC link.
  7. Paste that link only into the corresponding Pre deployment in BlitzTrials.

Step 5: Add Post 1, Post 2 and later assessments

Repeat the same process using Add new study for every new timepoint. Each installation produces its own resources:

TimepointManaged resourcesLink destination
PrePre Form, Raw tab, View tab and MAGIC linkPre deployment
Post 1Post 1 Form, Raw tab, View tab and MAGIC linkPost 1 deployment
Post 2Post 2 Form, Raw tab, View tab and MAGIC linkPost 2 deployment
Add versus Repair

Add new study creates another assessment and another link. Repair / resume reuses the selected assessment’s existing Form and link; it does not create Post 1 or Post 2.

Step 6: Test the complete link chain

  1. Complete one dummy Pre submission.
  2. Complete Post 1 using the same dummy Participant ID or the same verified Google account.
  3. Confirm that each response appears in the correct managed Raw tab.
  4. Open BlitzTrials Setup and select the assessment and output fields you want.
  5. Generate the separate study Views before testing the combined report.

Step 7: Generate a paired Pre/Post report

Use a paired report when you want to compare two timepoints directly.

  1. In the PAIRED PRE / POST REPORT panel, select the Pre assessment.
  2. Select the Post assessment to compare, such as Post 1.
  3. Confirm Match Records By and set Missing Data Display to -.
  4. Tick Generate Paired Report, or choose BlitzTrials → Generate Paired Pre / Post Report.

Step 8: Generate one longitudinal participant row

Use a longitudinal report when the study contains two or more selected assessments.

  1. In column A of BlitzTrials Setup, tick only the related assessments, such as Pre, Post 1 and Post 2.
  2. Do not include an unrelated study from another course or research project.
  3. In the LONGITUDINAL REPORT panel, tick Generate From Selected Studies, or choose BlitzTrials → Generate Longitudinal Report.
  4. The assessments are ordered automatically and each matched participant occupies one row.

Complete

The participant has one matching record for every selected assessment.

Incomplete

One or more selected assessments are missing. Unavailable fields display -.

Review Duplicate

More than one attempt was found for the same participant and assessment. Records remain visible for review.

Invalid Participant ID

The matching identifier was empty or unusable and must be reviewed manually.

Missing Pre responses are allowed

A participant who completes Post but misses Pre remains visible in the combined report. The unavailable Pre values display -; the participant is not silently discarded and missing data is not converted to zero.

Step 9: Create an optional SPSS-ready export

  1. Generate the required standard, paired or longitudinal report first.
  2. In the SPSS EXPORT panel, choose that generated report as the source.
  3. Select numeric choice coding when A–H answers should become 1–8.
  4. Keep a dedicated numeric missing code such as -99; this is separate from the report display dash.
  5. Choose whether to split multi-select answers into separate 0/1 variables and whether to create a codebook.
  6. Tick Generate SPSS Export.

Where your spreadsheet data is processed

The template contains a spreadsheet-bound Google Apps Script. After you make a copy and authorise it, the reporting workflow runs under the Google account that owns or has permission to use that copy.

Response data is processed inside the copied Google spreadsheet.
The installer creates or reuses the Google Form registered for the study.
The reporting script is not designed to send participant responses to BlitzTrials.
Sharing and access remain controlled through your Google account or organisation.
Why Google requests permission

The script needs permission to work with the spreadsheet and to create, open or link the managed Google Form. Google may also request Drive permission when the installer is asked to support “Anyone with the link” responder access.

Only authorise the template using the Google account that should own or manage the study resources.

Troubleshooting

The BlitzTrials menu does not appear

Reload the spreadsheet and wait several seconds. If necessary, open Extensions → Apps Script, run onOpen once, then return to the spreadsheet and reload.

The processed View is empty

Submit one dummy response. Confirm that the Raw tab contains both Magical ID and Magical Result values and that the matching assessment is selected in BlitzTrials Setup.

The installer stopped before completion

Reopen Add / Repair Study, select Repair / resume, choose the assessment and run it again.

A participant’s Info fields are blank

Check that column A of the Info tab contains exactly the same Participant ID as the second segment of the Magical ID.

I expected a combined Pre/Post table

The Basic edition generates separate study Views. A combined paired or longitudinal table requires the separate Advanced Pre/Post edition.

My organisation blocks public Form access

Use the responder-access policy permitted by your Google Workspace administrator. Repair the study with the public-access option unticked when appropriate.

Protect access to the copied spreadsheet

Keep Editor access limited to authorised personnel, particularly when the optional Info tab contains identifying information. Follow your organisation’s approved Google Workspace sharing, retention and research-data policies.
